“To protect our safety, our security, our safety, our next action will be to establish an independent 9/11-style foreign commission to 'investigate and report the facts and causes related to the domestic terrorist attack of January 6, 2021 on Capitol Hill. from the United States, '”Pelosi wrote.
Pelosi had called for the formation of a commission of this nature and assured that it was necessary to do so.
A commission of this nature would need to be established by statute approved by both houses and signed by the president. The members of the commission would not be popularly elected leaders but would be independent from the government.
In another letter to House Democrats earlier this month, Pelosi wrote that it was “clear that a 9/11-style commission needs to be established to examine and report the facts, causes, and security issues related to the terrorist attack on the United States. mob on January 6 ”.
The attack, which left people dead, prompted Democrats to speed up an impeachment process against President Donald Trump in January. The trial of the former president concluded in the Senate over the weekend, and ended with an acquittal of the only charge against for incitement to insurrection.
However, efforts to tighten security on Capitol Hill and establish the motives that led to the attack by a violent, pro-Trump mob on January 6, still continue.
In mid-January, Pelosi announced that retired Lieutenant General Russel Honoré will lead a review of the Capitol's "security infrastructure" in the wake of the attack.
"For the past few weeks, General Honoré has been assessing our security needs, reviewing what happened on January 6 and how we must ensure that it does not happen again," Pelosi wrote in her letter Monday.
